Traditional healers of South Africa embrace herbal as well as ritualistic practices. They burn imphepho to link to their ancestors.
Sangomas are trained to diagnose ailments and provide cures that involve herbalism as well as witchcraft. They burn imphepho to gain insight from the ancestors and to ward off evil entities. These healers are effectively South African shamans who are highly revered and respected in a society where illness or misfortune is thought to be caused by witchcraft, pollution (contact with impure objects or occurrences) or through neglect of the ancestors. Shamans perform rituals and give muti to heal a person holistically i.e. physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Inyangas are herbalists who make medicine (muti) from indigenous plants to treat various ailments and secret knowledge about them is handed down from previous generations.
